Linking tree cover change to historical management practices in urban parks

چکیده

Urban tree canopy (UTC) in parks is shaped by complex interactions between social and ecological processes over decades. To understand UTC change parks, it critical to identify characterize the unique set of that drive long-term change. We sought uncover feedbacks changes a post-industrial city experienced substantial population loss park disinvestment. Our mixed-methods approach involved quantifying spatiotemporal connecting those historical management practices for three Philadelphia, PA (US). delineated using aerial imagery 1959 2018, synthesized information from archival records semi-structured interviews about practices. found gains 1980, due both: (a) budget cuts, mowing cessation, associated unintended forest emergence; (b) purposeful planting reforestation activities. While some were purposeful, others unintentional reflect successional on unmaintained lands. Contrary literature suggesting financial investment would lead gain, we saw declining following an influx new funding post-2000 construction restoration. differing pathways leading convergent outcomes gains. Across goals landscapes had important ramifications UTC. work suggests landscape could benefit improved understanding how impact land cover long-term.

Database for Estimating Tree Responses of Walnut and Other Hardwoods to Ground Cover Management Practices

The ground cover in plantings of walnut and other hardwoods can substantially affect tree growth and seed production. The number of alternative ground covers that have been suggested for establishment in tree plantings far exceeds the number that have already been tested with walnut and other temperate hardwoods. Knowing how other hardwood species respond to ground covers and which have respons...

Urban tree cover change in Detroit and Atlanta , USA , 1951 – 2010

We assessed tree cover using random points and polygons distributed within the administrative boundaries of Detroit, MI and Atlanta, GA. Two approaches were tested, a point-based approach using 1000 randomly located sample points, and polygon-based approach using 250 circular areas, 200 m in radius (12.56 ha). In the case of Atlanta, both approaches arrived at similar estimates of tree cover (5...

Impact of urban land cover change on land surface temperature

The rapid growth in urban population is seen to create a need for the development of more urban infrastructures. In order to meet this need, natural surfaces such as vegetation are been replaced with non-vegetated surfaces such as asphalt and bricks which has the ability to absorb heat and release it later. This change in land cover is seen to increase the land surface temperature. Previous stu...

An Object-oriented Approach to Urban Land Cover Change Detection

Over the past decades, most of the remote sensing studies dealt with natural environment. The advance of remote sensing satellites and the innovative methods of proceeding high resolution images have contributed to integrated urban studies. This project is an attempt to use remote sensing technology so as to monitor the urban sprawl of the city of Thessaloniki and detect the changes occurred th...

Monitoring urban land cover change: An expert system approach to land cover classification of semiarid to arid urban centers

The spatial and temporal distribution of land cover is a fundamental dataset for urban ecological research. An expert (or hypothesis testing) system has been used with Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data to derive a land cover classification for the semiarid Phoenix metropolitan portion of the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) site. Expert systems allow for the inte...
